Gerald "Gerry" Soukup
July 28, 1944 - September 5, 2011
Gerald “Gerry” Charles Soukup, age 67, died Monday, September 5, 2011 at Sanford Hospital of a heart attack. Gerry was born July 28, 1944 in Wagner, SD to Charles and Lillian Soukup. He graduated from Marty Mission High School and continued his education at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. Gerry married Virginia Cihak in 1963. He started working for Cengas/Minnegasco in Sioux Falls in 1969. He was united in marriage with Bonnie Sadler in 1979. The couple resided in Sioux Falls, SD until 1992 when Gerry was transferred to Lincoln, NE. He continued to work for the gas company, retiring from the Black Hills Corporation in Beatrice, NE in 2007. They returned to Sioux Falls to enjoy friends and family in retirement. They were members of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Lincoln and are now members of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Sioux Falls. Gerry was active in numerous organizations and charitable groups. Over the years Gerry volunteered and provided leadership for many organizations: the Visiting Nurses Association, Alzheimer Association, Leadership Lincoln, Jaycees, Sertoma in Sioux Falls, Beatrice Chamber of Commerce, Foundation Fighting Blindness, United Way & American Cancer Society. He loved fishing, golfing (a Hole in One), Nebraska Huskers football, traveling, and time with family, especially grandkids. He enjoyed life to the fullest. Gerry is survived by his wife of 32 years, Bonnie and children, Jeff (Tami) Soukup, Lincoln, NE, Natalie (Steve) Hughes, Houston, TX, Kelly (Alan) Balfour, Petaluma, CA, Julie Soukup, Houston, TX, Brett (Becky) Sadler, Brandon, SD, Charles (Christina) Soukup, Denver, CO, and eight grandchildren, Cory and Drew Soukup, Lincoln, NE, Jordan Hughes, Houston, TX, Zachary and Noah Balfour, Petaluma, CA, Austin and Jessica Sadler, Brandon, SD, and Rose Soukup, Denver, CO; one sister, Marian (Don) Orton, Tucson, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Ernie, and sister, Margaret. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00am Friday, September 9, 2011 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with interment at Wagner Cemetery. Visitation will begin 2:00pm Thursday, September 8, 2011 at Heritage Funeral Home with family present ot greet friends from 6:00-8:00pm with a liturgical wake at 7:00pm in our Chapel.
