Johnson, Bernadette Patricia (Whalen) Age 85, of Brooklyn Center, passed away on August 8, 2013. Born March 28, 1928 in Duluth, MN, Bernie graduated from Denfeld High School in 1946 and St. Mary's School of Nursing in 1949. She worked as an RN at St. Mary's Hospital (Duluth) and Mercy Hospital (Denver) before marrying Denfeld classmate, Clyde Johnson, in 1953 and moving to Minneapolis and then Brooklyn Center in 1956 where they raised 4 children. Bernie worked as a school nurse at Orchard Lane Elementary, was a charter member of St. Alphonsus Church, and a St. Gabriels' Guild member since 1959. She frequently volunteered as a nurse and minister of care. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, camping, fishing, walking, crossword puzzles, cheering her children and grandchildren in sports and dance, playing cards with friends and beating Clyde in Boggle. But most of all she loved spending time with family. She will be deeply missed by best friend and loving husband of 60 years, Clyde; children Jill Kufrin, Gary (Katie), Tom (Jayne) and Chuck (Anne); grandchildren Drew (Dana), Joe, Sarah (Chad), Derek (Megan), Dane (Natasha), Emily, Becca, Jackie and Cooper; 7 great grandchildren; sister Mary Warner; brothers Richard and Darby Whalen; and many dear friends. Mass will be 11 AM, Thursday, August 15 at St. Alphonsus Church, 7025 Halifax Ave. N., Brooklyn Center with visitation 1 hour prior to mass and a luncheon to follow mass. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory preferred to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 8011 34th Ave. S., Suite 116, Bloomington, MN 55425.
