Robert H. Murfin

Robert H. Murfin, 98, of Springfield, passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2011 at River Birch Senior Living.
He was born on August 28, 1912 in McDonough County the son of George H. and Alta Hankins Murfin. He married Ruth Marie Newell on June 28, 1941 in Tallahoma, TN.
Robert enlisted in the Illinois National Guard from May 1936 until March 1941. He was later released to the Emergency Relief Committee. He was recalled to active duty on December 5, 1942. He served during WWII, after which he served in reserve units, with periods of full time service. He worked for the Illinois National Guard until retirement on August 28, 1972. He served for a total of 35 years and retired as Command Sergeant Major (E9).
He is survived by wife, Ruth Marie Murfin; one son, George (Carolyn) Murfin of Riverton; three daughters, Charlene Baranek of Merrietta, GA, Helene (Robert) Diller of Patten, ME, Norine (Robert) Fuld of Farmington, CT; one sister Ethel Seeger of MI; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Southern View Chapel, 4500 S. 2nd St., Springfield, IL. Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, June 3, 2011 at Southern View Chapel, with Reverend Brian Gilley officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will conduct Military Honors.

Gary & Anna WilsonWe've just heard of Robert entering his heavenly home today. Our condolences are with the family. Even though he is truly mised by family and friends, we know he is celebrating eternal life with his Savior.
Anna remembers him fondly. After we had our son Robert, Mr. Murfin came over one afternoon while I was at work, and assembled a swing/bed for him. Rob will be 25 on Sunday.
We will remember him for his love for family, friendship.advice and help through the years.
